Happen to know someone with 17,279 bookmarks organized in 9,538 folders? Must be some psychotic bookmarking freak with a nasty folder fetish! Glad that you do not know any such person? Actually, now you do. So why that many folders? Well, this is the organization you get when you have the best mechanism for organizing bookmarks invented to date. Categories are super-charged folders with the convenience of tags. Like tags, categories do not need to be created before use, but unlike tags, they have structure. In fact, categories completely subsume both folders and tags. Assigning bookmarks to categories involves searching for the appropriate category and the process is simpler than tagging. As an added bonus, more categories imply less bookmarking effort and that explains the 9,538 categories in my bookmarking database.

Want to open ten of your favorite news sites with one click? A group menu will let you do that. With a second click, it will let you open all your favorite blogs. Another click will let you open all your web-mail accounts. Sounds good? Must be complicated to get your bookmarks arranged in group menus? Not at all! Just open your favorite web sites, click a button and you are all set. The best part is, you don't always have to open all the web sites in a group at once. Group menus let you choose. They even let you search your favorite web sites.

Can you search your bookmarks, browsing history and even the web with a single toolbar that has no search boxes? The Categorize toolbar makes this possible. It puts the search boxes inside of toolbar menus so that they do not waste space. To perform a search you click a toolbar button to open a toolbar menu and start typing. The search results show as you type right in the menu. Even better, once you have typed your search, you move the mouse over another toolbar menu button and the search switches over to that menu. This lets you type a single search and get results from multiple sources by just moving the mouse.
