Cliqz – search directly in your browser

Author(s):

With Cliqz you'll experience an entirely new web: direct, fast and smart

QUICK SEARCH
Direct: In most cases, you already have a good idea of where you want to go, where you can do something specific or where you can get the information you need. Searches like these with a view to navigating make up the lion's share of web searches. And you can now carry out these searches from within your browser. This is where Cliqz differs fundamentally from conventional search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo first take you to their own pages. Once there, you have to scan through a long list of search results and ads to find the most appropriate hit. With Cliqz, you can search without this detour.

Fast: Simply click on a recommendation from the short selection in the drop-down menu and you'll be taken straight to the relevant website. For popular websites, there are smart Cliqz abbreviations. Instead of visiting the relevant homepage and then working your way step by step to your actual destination, you can go straight to the right place.

Smart: With smart Cliqz for direct replies, you can find what you're looking for even more quickly and easily. They provide you with a wide range of information within your browser – from flight status to weather. And with the smart Cliqz for news sites, you're always up to date.

Open
Should you need more or different search results, you can easily redirect your query to other search engines.

How it works
While you're typing search terms or web addresses, a clearly structured selection of website recommendations is shown in the Cliqz drop-down menu below the entry field. The recommendations are based either on our own search technology or on your Firefox history or bookmarks. As a result, you can find what you want quickly and discover new sites, but also have convenient access to your favorites.

Simply click on a recommendation and you're taken straight to the relevant website. If you'd like to open the website in a new tab, click on the logo to the right of the recommendation. Not the right website after all? Clicking on the grey button at the left of the browser bar takes you back to the recommendations so that you can try out the next one. Still not found the right one? Place the cursor in the entry field and press the "Enter" key. Your search entry will then be forwarded automatically to your standard search engine set in Firefox.

YOUR NEW HUB
Cliqz Tab Page
Cliqz offers its own page that you will see on opening a new window or a new tab. This new tab page includes speed dials for your most visited websites (excluding websites from private sessions, of course) and favorite sites. You can manually add and remove speed dials. The Cliqz new tab page keeps you up-to-date by showing you a mix of headlines from popular news sources and news sources you visit often.
The Cliqz Tab page is switched on by default. Prefer your “old” Firefox page? You can turn Cliqz Tab off at any time via the Cliqz Control Center (see the “Q” symbol in the browser bar or your settings menu).

RECLAIM CONTROL OVER YOUR DATA
Anti-Tracking
It is common for websites to include tracking services that record all user activity. Multiple tracking companies watch user’s every step, even what they do on individual websites. It’s close to impossible to know how and where your personal information gets distributed.
The Cliqz Anti-Tracking feature overwrites all tracking data that could be used to identify you as an individual user. Cliqz protects you efficiently from being tracked.

Data protection
Cliqz respects your privacy. We don't store any kind of personal information. Cliqz for Firefox and our backend-infrastructure have been awarded the "Certified Data Protection" seal by the safety standards authority for Saarland (TÜV). No information is stored on the identity and behavior of individual web users. By preference, our browser add-on shows you the encrypted version of websites (HTTPS) in its search results. You can read more in the privacy statement (button above).

Transparency
The softwarecode of the Cliqz browser and browser extension is
Open Source .

Human Web
Cliqz uses the wisdom of the crowd – users provide statistical data and thus build Cliqz's web index. We call this technology "Human Web". From users who participate in the Human Web, Cliqz stores on its servers anonymous data about website visits. Separately, Cliqz stores anonymous data about web searches and inputs into the browser bar. Human Web data is exclusively used to detect websites and assess their relevance and security. Participating in the Human Web is optional. Learn more about the Human Web and how to opt-in or out in the privacy statement .

Cliqz is there for you
If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for improvement, our "helping hand" is there to assist you personally – via web form, e-mail or phone. We also look forward to hearing from you via Facebook or Twitter.

About Cliqz
We are a Munich start-up company whose mission is to strengthen the position of Internet users and to put them in control. Our team of over 100 internet enthusiasts dedicates its efforts to making the web a little bit better for you every day. We believe in an open Internet, the right of privacy and open source. Cliqz GmbH is owned by Mozilla and Hubert Burda Media, a European media company. Cliqz operates independently from other Burda businesses, does not share any data with them and handles Burda-owned websites just as any other websites (e.g. in search ranking and anti-tracking).

Give Cliqz a try
Cliqz was originally designed for German users. We work hard on supporting more countries/languages. Our US-English search already produces good results, although not yet on the same quality level that we already reached in German. It's definely worth a try! Just see it as a beta-version of a US search engine. As Cliqz search is desiged to learn fast, you'll quickly see improvements. If Cliqz doesn't show a suitable website recommendation, you can continue your search using your standard search engine with just a click.
You'll soon get used to the new way of navigating the web using quick search. If you'd rather return to the conventional system for searching the web, you can easily uninstall Cliqz and remove it completely. Simply make the relevant setting under "Add-Ons" in the Firefox menu (at the very top right of the browser).
