SaveLink

Author(s):

Saving links externally has some advantages over saving them inside Firefox as shortcuts. I find this useful when working with projects including a group of files like text, pictures, diagrams etc. This add-on enables to add external links. The alternative would be to save the whole page and possibly all its files (and links and who knows what).
Version 3 adds the possibility to go directly to user defined folders/directories.

There are tow options:
1: displaying a page you can save a link to that same page
2. or you can save links to the hyper-linked pages without opening those pages
The option depends on the position of the mouse. If you have over a hyperlink option 2 is chosen, otherwise option 1.

A Windows Shortcut File looks like this:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/developers/addon/submit

A Unix desktop files like this
[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8\nIcon=text-html
Type=Link
Name=RFI
URL=http://www.rfi.fr

A Mac file looks like

<plist version="1.0"><dict>
<key>URL</key> <string>http://www.google.com</string>
</dict></plist>

This add on simply adds a Menu Items to the File Menu and the Context Menu. When selected it opens a File Save-As dialogue and suggests a name,
which is derived either from the page's title (option 1) or from the name of the hyperlink (Option 2). The name is cleared of all invalid file name characters: #\/:*?"<>|# and that are replaced by an underscore _.

Languages: German, French, English, Hebrew, Greek

A note on some alternatives:
There is the add on "deskcut", which has been around for some years. I did not know.
But it has some features which I personally find unacceptable such as always starting with the root directory (uff)
when saving a link, not being able to choose the name.

The same or similar is true as regards the action of "dragging the icon left to URL" in Firefox, which is mentioned in a review "Unneeded" below.
I personally find it unhandy: switching applications,
what if the file explorer is not in the right directory and so on ...

So I like @bybias's comment reworded "Yes, there are stairs but we might as well use the lift."
